Today was our first work day on Drink Label creation. We need to make a realistic drink label for a fictitious drink. My idea is Carribean Cooler, a cool natural juice drink. I got the basic design ready, and i will add to it over the next couple of days.

Today in class I finished my 3 text filter assignments. My favorite is the America one, but the most work was the Magma one, due to the difficulty of simplicity. Finding the right font and filters was very hard.
Today in class we worked on making custom words where the text looks like the word would. For example, Cookie, but it's made out of cookie dough, with chocolate chips and texture and all. It is really hard to do on your own. Finding the right font on its own is hard to do: for example, if I wanted to do one for Magma, I would want a font with flowing letters yet is still a little bit sinister looking. Finding fonts to fit your needs really takes time.
After that, it is just a matter of using layers to your advantage. While you may not know what your doing at the start, once you look around for an adjustment layer and a texture filter, you'll find some stuff that works just right. From there, you just need to add one or two more more bits to it and maybe customize one of the letters, and you're done. It sure does take time though. Today in class, we learned about the different types of graphic types. I did a worksheet on the differences between raster and vector graphics. Vector graphics are much more advanced (for accurate printing), while Raster graphics are made for use on the web.
I also talked with my group about the photography project we have coming up. I am excited to use my photoshop skills to fix up the images later this month. Today we started learning about typography. Initially I watched a short video about the history of type faces, all the way from Johannes Gutenberg and the first typeface to Comic Sans and other computer based fonts. It was interesting to see how many people went into making small improvements to the art of typography. Many, many people from the 1500s to the 1950s all added small parts to previously accepted fonts to improve them: more serifs, less serifs, more curves, less curves, etc.
After that, we learned about the various parts of typography. The most important vocabulary for us to know working in photoshop and illustrator are Kerning and Leading: the space between letters and the space between lines. These are incredibly important if we are editing font to fit spaces. There are many other important parts of fonts, but we will have to change the Kerning and Leading of our font regularly. Today in class I worked on adding layer masks and irregular masks to images. There are all sorts of irregular layered effects and artistic effects you can add to an image with a small amount of work and a the correct layer masking tools. I really liked how the layered effects can be used to make interesting artistic posters. Overall, Im happy that were back to working in photoshop now that i've brushed up on my skills and the basics. Photoshop is much more intuitive and versatile than illustrator in my opinion. the only problem is that photoshop tends to make odd, blocky, and flat edges unlike illustrator, where they can look more organic. Maybe ill learn how to fix that soon.
Today in class I edited some basic photos, including clip art and adding lines using strokes. The clip art one was very interesting. I never thought of using select all to create a black version of clip art then editing that to get a shadow. I also learned about the 'place' option. The last and most important thing i learned is that i can add a stroke or fill to any selection in photoshop. This makes it much easier to add colors in precise shapes.
Today in class I worked on editing the colors in photos. I had to edit the hue of a photo, posterize it, and set it to black and white only. It was all very interesting. The most important thing i learned is the multiple ways to add adjustments and layers to a photo. I can go to at least 4 different places to add adjustments, overlays, masks, filters, and styles to my images in photoshop. Hopefully because of this practice I can remember all the ways to use photoshop and not forget the tools in it.
